Hurricane Sandy won’t stop ‘The Heiress’ from opening on time
The new Broadway revival of “The Heiress,” with Jessica Chastain and “Downton Abbey” star Dan Stevens, has the bad luck of opening the same week as Hurricane Sandy’s big debut. But despite a canceled preview performance, the production will still open on Thursday as scheduled, according to a spokesman.
“The Heiress,” which began preview performances on Oct. 6, is running at the Walter Kerr Theatre in New York. Producers canceled Tuesday’s preview due to the lingering effects of the hurricane, which cut power to large portions of the East Coast and shut down public transportation in New York.
The play is scheduled to resume previews on Wednesday. The production will officially open on Thursday for an 18-week run. It is the only Broadway production that is opening this week.
“The Heiress” also stars David Strathairn and Judith Ivey, and is directed by Moisés Kaufman. The play, by Ruth Goetz and Augustus Goetz, is adapted from the novel “Washington Square” by Henry James.
Broadway shows saw cancellations across the board on Monday and Tuesday because of Hurricane Sandy. As of Tuesday afternoon, many shows were scheduled to resume performances on Wednesday.
