La Scala to lose conductor Daniel Barenboim
The leadership of the famed Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Italy, has entered a state of uncertainty following a report that the company’s top artistic director will be leaving.
Daniel Barenboim, the musical director of the company, is stepping down in 2014, two years before his contract expires, according to an Associated Press report. The company’s general manager, Stéphane Lissner, had previously announced his intention to leave the company.
Barenboim became musical director at La Scala in 2011. The company has not made any official announcement regarding his planned departure. It remains uncertain who will succeed Barenboim on the podium, but reports have suggested that Riccardo Chailly is the favorite candidate.
Alexander Pereira, the artistic director of the Salzburg Festival, will succeed Lissner in the role of general manager at La Scala.
Barenboim’s departure comes eight years after his predecessor, Riccardo Muti, quit the La Scala post amid a quarrel with the company.
