Sam Mendes, Rob Marshall will revive their revival of ‘Cabaret’
Call it a revival of a revival of a classic musical. Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall will team up again to bring back their popular 1998 Roundabout Theatre Company production of “Cabaret” for an opening next year set for April 24 at Studio 54 in New York.
Alan Cumming, who played the Master of Ceremonies in the 1998 production, will return alongside Michelle Williams as Sally Bowles. (The late Natasha Richardson played Bowles in the 1998 version.)
The 24-week engagement is scheduled to begin preview performances on March 21. The full cast will be announced at a later date.

The Roundabout’s “Cabaret” was a critical and box office hit when it opened 15 years ago, running for close to six years and more than 2,000 performances. The cast changed a few times throughout the run, with the role of Bowles played by Jennifer Jason Leigh, Brooke Shields, Molly Ringwald and others.
The production won multiple Tony Awards, including the prize for musical revival. Cumming and Richardson also received Tonys.
Mendes and Marshall shared directing duties, with Marshall also serving as choreographer.
Since then, they have gone on to lucrative movie careers. Marshall is set to direct a screen adaptation of the musical “Into the Woods” later this year, and Mendes has signed on for another James Bond movie following the success of “Skyfall” last year.
