Dermot Mulroney, Julia Roberts set for ‘August: Osage County’ film

Dermot Mulroney is joining the cast of A-list stage and screen stars for the film adaption of Tracy Letts’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play “August: Osage County.”

Mulroney will be reunited with his “My Best Friend’s Wedding” co-star Julia Roberts.

In “August: Osage County,” Mulroney will play Steve, a less-than-noble businessman whose eye wanders to the pot-smoking daughter of Barbara (Roberts), played by “Little Miss Sunshine’s” Abigail Breslin.

As previously announced, Tony Award winner Margo Martindale (“Cat on a Hot Tin Roof”) and three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep will play sisters Mattie Fae Aiken and pill-popping Violet, respectively.

Screen stars Juliette Lewis and Chris Cooper round out the ensemble. The screenplay was penned by Letts; John Wells (“E.R.,” “Shameless”) is to direct.

Filming is planned for the fall in Oklahoma.

“August: Osage County” is an epic story, a dark comedy about the meltdown of a large Oklahoma clan following a family crisis.

It premiered in 2007 at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre and made its way to Broadway later that year, where it won the Tony Award for best play. It also won Letts the Pulitzer Prize for drama.

“August” had a run at the Ahmanson Theatre in 2010; Times theater critic Charles McNulty called it “supernaturally engaging.”
