Twilight Time’s offerings include ‘The Last Detail’ and other gems

The boutique Blu-ray/DVD label Twilight Time, which specializes in vintage films, has released a wonderfully eclectic mixture of titles, including films that garnered Oscar nominations but are rarely seen these days. Among them are 1969’s “The Happy Ending,” written and directed by Richard Brooks and starring then-wife Jean Simmons as a bored Denver housewife who has turned to pills and liquor. Simmons received a nomination, as did the song “What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?” Hal Ashby’s bawdy, funny and poignant “The Last Detail” (1973) earned nominations for actors Jack Nicholson and Randy Quaid and for Robert Towne’s screenplay. And Ashby’s “Bound for Glory,” his wonderful 1976 biopic on Woody Guthrie (David Carradine), was nominated for best film and received Oscars for Haskell Wexler’s cinematography and Leonard Rosenman’s score.
