‘Pacific Rim’ can’t beat ‘The Heat’ in DVD/Blu-ray sales

Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy are arresting plenty of DVD and Blu-ray buyers.

Their buddy cop comedy “The Heat” is the top title on Rentrak’s DVD sales chart for its first week in release, thwarting Guillermo Del Toro’s science fiction smash-em-up movie “Pacific Rim.”

“The Heat,” in which Bullock plays a buttoned-up FBI agent who has to team up with a loutish local law enforcement officer to catch a drug kingpin, was one of the biggest grossing movies of the summer, with a domestic take of more than $159 million.

“Pacific Rim,” which pitted 25-story robots against 25-story monsters, came in second place on the DVD chart, followed by the DreamWorks-produced, Fox-distributed animated offering “The Croods,” about a Stone Age family, and the Diamond edition of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid.”

Last week’s No. 1, “The Hangover III,” fell all the way to fifth place. The stand-up comedy special by Kevin Hart, “Let Me Explain,” debuted in ninth.

The apocalyptic comedy “This Is the End” was the top rental for the second week in a row.
