Rami Malek's phone is having a rough couple of days.

Just a day after the star of USA's critically acclaimed "Mr. Robot" was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild award, he received a second day of congratulatory texts, this time for nabbing a Golden Globe nomination for best actor in a drama.

As if determined to avoid the “do any of you even watch TV?” reaction that inevitably accompanies the Round Up of Usual Suspects known as the Emmy nominations, the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. produced a jaw-dropping list of Golden Globe nominees on Thursday.

And while it continues the long-standing tradition of Golden Globe wackiness, the list also rather bravely reflects the virtually unmeasurable nature of modern television.

Nominations for the 73rd Golden Globe Awards came pouring in this morning, and after finding out the good news several nominees took the opportunity to express their appreciation.

Sam Smith, Ellie Goulding, Charlie Puth and Wiz Khalifa are among the pop acts that will be vying for original song at the Golden Globe Awards ceremony, the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. announced.

Sounds like Maggie Smith is planning on making a cameo at the Val party. In a statement released to the press after her Golden Globe nomination for "The Lady in the Van" she implied that she is coming to Los Angeles for the big shindig. Now it's a party.

Rachel Bloom can't sit still, and for good reason.

Last year, it was "Birdman" versus "Boyhood." The year before: "12 Years a Slave" and "Gravity" commanded the conversation. The year before that: "Argo" and "Lincoln" battled it out.

Now that the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations have been announced, the only thing that's clear is that we're going to have to wait for this year's Oscar narrative to come into focus. There are a lot of good movies and performances this year, and critics groups and awards voters have yet to reach any kind of consensus on the best of the best.

"Casual" creator and showrunner Zander Lehmann is anything but as he celebrates his (and streaming content provider Hulu's) first Golden Globe nomination.

Countless aspiring actors would kill to be Saoirse Ronan. At just 21 years old, the actress has plenty of experience under her belt and a number of awards nominations (and wins) to show for it. Thursday morning, that list got longer with a Golden Globes nomination for her leading role in "Brooklyn" -- a role that also landed her a Screen Actors Guild Awards nomination.

How she celebrates (and apparently her secrets to getting nominated): Indian curry and gold nail polish.

Sylvester Stallone has waited a long time -- 39 years if you're counting -- to earn another Golden Globe nomination. In 1976, newcomer Stallone received nominations for lead actor in a motion picture drama as well as a screenplay for the original "Rocky." And he went on to receive Oscar nominations in both categories.

Other veteran actresses and actors also did well with the Golden Globes on Thursday.

Paul Dano and John Cusack both play musician Brian Wilson in "Love & Mercy," but only Dano scored a Golden Globe nomination today. So we had to ask: Is that weird?

The Golden Globes have come a long way in five years. In 2010, you might recall, the nominees in the movie musical or comedy category included such enduring classics as “Burlesque,” “Red” and “The Tourist.” Now comedy nominations from the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. awards are at least respectable ("The Big Short" and "Joy") or slightly respectable (“Trainwreck” and "Spy"), and actors are (mostly) lauded for the performances for which they’re nominated.

Recent Golden Globe nominee Amy Schumer called in from New York to spill on her nod for best performance by an actress in "Trainwreck." And the comedy actress was pretty excited about her nomination: So much so that she said she might even abstain from taking her anti-depressants today.

Jane's abuela must have been praying nonstop: Gina Rodriguez, who plays new mom Jane Gloriana Villanueva on the CW's telenovela-style comedy "Jane the Virgin," won the Golden Globe Award for actress in a TV comedy last year and is nominated again this year.

Alicia Vikander is a double Golden Globe nominee. Her "Ex Machina" portrayal of a very human-like robot earned her a supporting actress nomination. And she's competing in the hot category of lead actress in a drama film, for playing the painter wife of artist Lile Elbe (Eddie Redmayne). Awards-season buzz for Brie Larson started right after the premiere of "Room" at September's Telluride Film Festival. Soon after, The Times' Rebecca Keegan talked with the actress about her preparation for the tough role as a longtime abduction victim.

Hulu has joined streaming content peers Amazon and Netflix by garnering its first Golden Globe nomination for the new comedy "Casual."

Other nominees in the best comedy/musical category include "Mozart in the Jungle," "Orange is the New Black," "Silicon Valley," "Transparent" and "Veep."

Golden Globe nominee "Shaun the Sheep" is up for best animated feature film along with "Anomalisa," "The Good Dinosaur," "Inside Out" and the "The Peanuts Movie."

There's always someone whose name gets butchered during award show nominations, and today the lucky winner was Irish actress Saoirse Ronan. Golden Globes presenter Dennis Quaid completely mispronounced the "Brooklyn" star's name on live television, calling her "See-sha." We'll give it to you, dude: It's not the easiest name in the world to say. But you know who's here to save the day? Ryan Gosling. Duh!

The Gos directed Ronan in his first movie, "Lost River," last year, so he got to know the 21-year-old well. He subsequently came up with this neat trick to remember the actress' name: "It's Sir-sha, like inertia!"

Rachel Bloom from TV series "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" has been nominated for a Golden Globe for actress in TV musical/comedy. Might as well break out the "West Covina" tune from the pilot.

"The Martian" is a comedy. As is David O. Russell's upcoming movie, "Joy."

So says the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn.'s eligibility committee, which, in a vote, decided to keep both films just where 20th Century Fox wanted them for the upcoming Golden Globes awards.

The blacklist-era biopic "Trumbo" didn't receive its wished-for comedy category placement, however. The HFPA's eligibility committee moved the film and its cast, which includes Bryan Cranston and Louis C.K., to drama.

When the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. first tabbed Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as hosts for its Golden Globes ceremony three years ago, HFPA member H.J. Park came out and stated the obvious.

"It's a coup against the academy, who hates us," Park told The Times.

This year's return to Ricky Gervais can't be seen as a similar stroke of genius, seeing as Gervais has already hosted the show from 2010 to 2012, preceding the Fey-Poehler three-year reign.
