Glenn Beck coming back to cable! Jennifer Lopez to play TV exec.
After the coffee. Before my ‘X Factor’ viewing party.
The Skinny: If this feels rushed it’s because I had to do it twice. Hit the wrong key and lost the first draft. At least I didn’t put my fist through the computer screen. Wednesday’s headlines include PETA’s concerns about animals in entertainment, Jennifer Lopez joins Nuvo network and Glenn Beck comes back to cable TV.
Daily Dose: Google Fiber has added some key networks to its new high-speed broadband pay-TV service it is launching in Kansas City, Mo., and Kansas City, Kansas. Now joining the lineup are several high-profile Walt Disney Co.-owned networks including ESPN and Disney Channel. Last week, Google Fiber struck a deal with the NFL Network. It still does not have HBO but talks are ongoing.
Don’t have a cow, man. The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is not happy about how Hollywood is treating animals. It has sent a letter to the American Humane Assn., the nonprofit outfit that monitors the use of animals in movies and films. Movies and TV shows specifically cited by PETA include “The Hobbit,” “The Lone Ranger” and HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire.” AHA management, PETA said in a letter to the AHA board, “looked the other way or was even complicit in arranging for the filming of sequences that were potentially dangerous for animals.” AHA denies the allegations and countered that some are the work of a disgruntled employee. Coverage from the Los Angeles Times.
He’s back. Controversial commentator Glenn Beck who left Fox Newslast year for the Internet is coming back to TV with a new cable channel that is being launched on satellite broadcaster Dish Network. Called TheBlaze TV (did someone forget to hit the space bar between “the” and “blaze?”), the channel will launch this Wednesday. It will have 35 hours of original content a week, according to the New York Times. Wonder how many of those won’t feature Beck ranting and if this will make all those Dish subscribers missing AMC feel better.
Jenny in the office.Movie and music star Jennifer Lopez’s next role will be that of a TV executive. Lopez is joining Nuvo TV, a small English-language network aimed at Latino viewers. Lopez’s production company will provide content for Nuvo and she will advise on marketing and promotion as well as strategy. More from USA Today and the Los Angeles Times. I smell a Fiat promotion deal coming soon.
Katie wow’s them. The debut of Katie Couric’s new daytime talk showscored a 2.8 rating, which in today’s TV landscape is not a bad number. Each rating point represents 1% of the nation’s 114 million TV homes. Couric did better than the other new shows but it will be weeks or even months before we see what staying power she has. Details on her debut from Bloomberg.
Priorities, priorities. Tuesday was the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks and for news organizations it was a struggle to find a balance between appropriate coverage and exploitation. The morning shows on CBS and ABC covered the moment of silence but NBC’s “Today”made the tough call and went with a segment featuring Kardashian mom Kris Jenner. More on that decision from Reuters.
Inside the Los Angeles Times: Here’s the reason CBS has billboards all over town touting how much it contributes to the Los Angeles economy.
