5:20 p.m.: Anne Hathaway, another eagerly awaited clotheshorse on the SAG Awards red carpet, chose black -- the color of the night -- with sheer accents, another big trend.

Her Giambattista Valli gown has a fairy-tale look, with a sleeveless bodice of embroidered sheer tulle, and a full sheer skirt revealing a shorter skirt underneath.

It’s romantic but with a twist. Well done.

5:05 p.m.: January Jones is a last-minute stunner on the SAG Awards red carpet, wearing a black and white Prabal Gurung gown, her blond hair sculpted into a pompadour-mullet like David Bowie from his Aladdin Sane days.

I got a longer look at Julianne Moore’s Chanel couture gown. And I think it could fit better. A lot better. It’s blousy in the cleavage area and a bit bunchy in back. Still a great dress, just unfortunate it doesn’t look as great as it could.

Designer Zuhair Murad had a decidedly more low-key moment on the red carpet tonight than at the Golden Globes. Amy Poehler’s simple black jersey gown is a 180 from Jennifer Lopez’s Globes gown, a blush-colored lace style that was about as sheer as you can get without risking an FCC fine.

And speaking of black, which was a key color tonight, I really like the minimalist look of Claire Danes’ one-shoulder, black Givenchy gown. Very different from everything else we have seen in a good way.

4:45 p.m.: Number 2 of the fashion troika, Jennifer Lawrence, is walking the SAG Awards red carpet, apparently with walking pneumonia. Her navy blue gown is by Dior. It’s not my favorite Dior moment for her. At all.

Marion Cotillard is stealing the Dior show, just as she did at the Golden Globes. She’s wearing a navy blue Dior gown with a white bodice and high-low hem. And her short bob hairstyle is the epitome of French chic.

There is a lot of dark blue and black on the carpet. Tina Fey looks as good as she ever has in a strapless black Oscar de la Renta gown with a sparkly belt. Nicole Kidman is wearing an anything-but-basic-black, sheer Vivienne Westwood gown with delicate floral embroidery on the front.

Amanda Seyfried is in a Zac Posen navy blue fishtail gown. The gown doesn’t do much for her, but the amazing Lorraine Schwartz medallion necklace saves it.

4:28 p.m.: Julianne Moore can do no wrong when it comes to the red carpet. She’s my nominee for best dressed at the SAG Awards so far, in a white Chanel couture gown with black and white floral embroidery on the skirt.

I haven’t seen Chanel look so sexy on the red carpet in a long time.

Moore’s side parted, side-swept Veronica Lake hair is the style of the evening, seen on several other stars, including Amanda Seyfried and Jessica Chastain.

4:20 p.m: The first of the eagerly awaited fashion troika has arrived on the SAG Awards red carpet. And I wish I were more impressed. Jessica Chastain’s strapless red Alexander McQueen gown fits her like a glove, and the color works well with her hair. But somehow, it’s just meh.

Meanwhile, “Glee” star Naya Rivera is all over the sheer trend, wearing a black satin corseted Donna Karan gown with sheer accordion pleating across the décolletage. It’s a lot to take in.

Freida Pinto is showing Roland Mouret some love, wearing the French designer’s hot pink, draped front gown with some killer black satin ankle strap heels that look like Roger Vivier.

4:04 p.m.: At last, arrivals on the SAG Awards are turning up the style quotient.

Ralph Rucci is one of the most talented American designers working today, but his name is more typically associated with socialites than starlets. Until now. Michelle Dockery (“Downton Abbey”) looks smoldering in a vintage black Ralph Rucci gown with sheer cutouts revealing the contours of her side cleavage. Yes, side cleavage, and in a good way.

Rodarte designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy had a major score on the red carpet too. Kerry Washington is wearing a white strapless gown with a structured bodice by the Pasadena-based sisters. White gowns have been everywhere lately, but this one is something special.

3:48 p.m.: The SAG Awards red carpet looks like it’s awash in bad bridesmaids dresses so far. There’s every shade of pastel, at least on the early arrivals.

Hollywood has gone crazy for mermaids. Katrina Bowden (“30 Rock”) is wearing a celadon green tulle and chiffon fishtail gown by Badgley Mischka, and Ellie Kemper is in a sea-foam green Reem Acra dress with sparkly floral embroidery and a giant half bow at the waist. Kiernan Shipka (“Mad Men”) is in blush Oscar de la Renta, and Ariel Winter is in peach.

Best thing I have seen so far is Busy Philipps’ insanely gorgeous, chunky stone necklace by L.A. designer Irene Neuwirth.

Hoping things get better soon.

3:10 p.m.: Though the SAG Awards may not have the global draw of the Golden Globes and Oscars, that can make the red carpet fashion all the more interesting. Why? Not as much at stake means more risk-taking and more chances for lesser-known designers to shine.

From 2012, who can forget Rose Byrne’s daring white beaded Elie Saab jumpsuit — a look inspired, she said, by Michelle Pfeiffer in the film “Scarface.” In 2011, then-14-year-old Hailee Steinfeld stole the show in a candy-striped gown by Prada, a designer you don’t often see represented on the red carpet. And at the SAG Awards in 2010, Kate Hudson ignited a trend with her unorthodox jewelry styling, wearing a backless, long-sleeve white Emilio Pucci gown, with a Cartier diamond tassel sautoir draped against her bare back.

This year, all eyes will be on the fashion troika of Jennifer Lawrence, nominated for “Silver Linings Playbook”’ Anne Hathaway, nominated for “Les Misérables; and Jessica Chastain, given the nod for her role in “Zero Dark Thirty.”

On the TV side, the casts of “Modern Family,” “Glee” and “Mad Men” are likely to up the glam quotient, as will Nicole Kidman (nominated for “Hemingway and Gelhorn”) and Julianne Moore (nominated for “Game Change”).

And look out for lots of long sleeves, just like we saw at the Golden Globes, because it’s another one of those rare L.A. days with highs in the 50s and partly cloudy skies.
