SAG Awards 2013: Watch the Actor statue being made

Hollywood stars will be out in all their glittery glory when the Screen Actors Guild Awards are handed out Sunday night at the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles. But did you know the statuette — called the Actor, appropriately enough — is made at an unassuming foundry in Burbank?

American Fine Arts Foundry casts the molds for the solid bronze actor statuettes, which weigh more than 12 pounds each.

In the video above, the casting process takes place with workers in protective suits pouring molten bronze into molds to make the Actor.

Tom Hooper’s musical “Les Miserables,” Steven Spielberg’s political drama “Lincoln” and David O’Russell’s romantic dramedy “Silver Linings Playbook” each picked up four nominations. Ben Affleck’s CIA thriller “Argo” and Sam Mendes’ James Bond film “Skyfall” have two nominations, as do “The Sessions” and “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.” Kathryn Bigelow’s controversial Osama bin Laden manhunt film, “Zero Dark Thirty,” received only one nomination: lead actress for Golden Globe winner Jessica Chastain.

Dick Van Dyke will receive the Life Achievement Award as well.
