‘Elementary’: Join a live chat with star Jonny Lee Miller

Join actor Jonny Lee Miller and Times staff writer Glenn Whipp at 12:30 p.m. PDT Thursday for a live video chat about Miller’s work as Sherlock Holmes on the CBS television series “Elementary.”

Miller’s Holmes lives in modern New York, where he stayed after a stint in rehab. His sidekick Watson (played by Lucy Liu) is a sober living companion that Holmes’ father has hired to keep him on the straight and narrow. Yes, this roguish Holmes sports tattoos, but he also possesses the iconic character’s keen mind and quicksilver genius for solving mysteries that stump those around him.

Reviewing the series when it premiered in the fall, Times television critic Mary McNamara praised “Elementary” for delivering “characters at once solidly modern and true to the canon” created by Arthur Conan Doyle.

“Miller’s Sherlock is more boyish in his troubled brilliance,” McNamara wrote, “and clearly a romance with Watson is in the long-term offing, but each episode is less character-driven than those of (PBS miniseries) ‘Sherlock,’ more focused on the crime, reminding us that Conan Doyle was not as interested in character development as he was in storytelling; he all but invented the procedural.”

How did Miller dig in and deliver a wholly original take on a familiar character? And what should we expect next season? Join us for the chat -- with your questions in hand -- to find out.
