Chris Brown won’t be charged after cellphone-snatching accusation

Chris Brown won’t be charged in a “robbery by sudden snatching” case from February, in which he was accused of taking a woman’s cellphone after she tried to snap a picture of him as he left a Miami nightclub in a black Bentley.

No evidence was found that Brown intended to steal the phone or deleted any photos, one of which would be needed to make a case for robbery or theft, according to a memo released Friday by the Miami-Dade County state attorney.

The phone — which was snatched or dropped in Brown’s ride before it was tossed out the window, depending on which of the many witnesses’ stories are to be believed — ultimately wound up in the possession of Devon Blanche, the head of security for Tyga, another rapper who had just performed with Brown at the Cameo club in Miami and was also leaving.

Blanche said he tried to find the phone’s owner and then wound up taking it with him to Atlanta on tour, still intending to figure out the owner and return it. The phone, an iPhone 4S, was worth about $500, according to the original incident report.

Blanche said Brown was worried about any photos of himself with two women in the limo making it online and causing him problems with Rihanna, according to TMZ. The rapper was dating Karreuche Tran at the time of the incident.

Investigators determined, after checking out the evidence and numerous witness statements, that the phone could have been dropped in the car by its owner, leaving Brown to toss out something that didn’t belong there.

Phone owner Christal Spann told police that Brown had reached out of the car window and taken the device. Video taken after the incident showed her telling police that he’d snatched the phone.

The memo said the investigation’s findings would be forwarded to probation officials in Los Angeles for review. A felony charge against the 24-year-old could have created problems with Brown’s probation related to his 2009 felony conviction for assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna the night before the Grammy Awards.

In other Team Breezy news, Rihanna late Thursday tweeted an Instagram picture of herself hugging Brown, with the caption, “i dont wanna leave!!! Killed it tonight baby!!!” (that missive addressed to Chris Brown’s Instagram account, which has an unprintable user name). Since her whirlwind “777” tour wrapped, Rihanna’s been hanging with Brown during his “Carpe Diem” tour in Europe.

No corresponding tweet from Brown, of course — he’s still off Twitter, ever since his war of words with comedian Jenny Johnson.
