Lena Dunham launches newsletter Lenny, ‘your over-sharing Internet friend’

Need an abortion but not sure what to wear to the clinic? Has Lena Dunham got a newsletter for you.

Lenny -- a mash-up of Dunham’s and production partner Jenni Konner’s first names, suuhhh cuuuuute, raaaaaght? -- will launch in September, the “Girls” star announced Tuesday. The ladies “can’t wait to get into your inbox and tell you everything and hear everything,” they said via Instagram.

“Lenny is your over sharing Internet friend who will yell at you about your finances, help you choose a bathing suit, lamp, president ... AND tell you what to do if you need an abortion,” reads the newsletter’s mission statement (via the Cut), pretty much describing someone you’d wind up blocking eventually on social media.

The newsletter, self-funded by Konner and Dunham, is starting with a staff of four and will have paid contributors, the Cut said. It’ll expand into e-commerce down the line with a focus on what the site described as artisan products created by women.

“With Lenny there’s no such thing as TMI, there’s no such thing as self-involved,” Dunham told Buzzfeed. “We’ll be allowed to show the ugly and complicated thought processes that go into forming your own brand of feminism, and your own identity.”

Like Gwyneth Paltrow’s aspirational Goop, Lenny will be both newsletter and website. But Lenny is clearly not Goop -- though Konner told the Cut, “We worship Gwyneth. She has literally been the most supportive person of this project of anyone we’ve spoken to.” As of Tuesday evening, Paltrow had nothing Lenny-related on her Twitter or Instagram feeds; she may have been busy.

The target audience is “an army of like-minded intellectually curious women and the people who love them, who want to bring change but also want to know, like, where to buy the best tube top for summer that isn’t going to cost your entire paycheck,” Dunham told Buzzfeed. The straight, white cisgender woman also explained to the Cut that the budding newsletter is not just for “straight, white cisgender women.”

Finally, an email to newbie newsletter subscribers doubled down on the whole concept.

“[W]e want to entertain and inform you, but we also want to make the world better for women and the people who love them,” it read. “That means keeping abortion safe and legal, keeping birth control in your pocket and getting the right people elected, all while wearing extremely fierce jumpsuits.”

While the Lenny website reportedly will have no comments function, we still welcome them here. Thoughts?
