Mariah Carey and beau James Packer are engaged after he popped the question Thursday night at a private dinner with friends in New York City.
The billionaire Aussie businessman rounded up close friends and surprised the singer with dinner and the proposal, according to TMZ.
Carey said in November that they’d met “a few years back” in Aspen, and “hit it off” at the “Hercules” premiere in July 2014. But the couple have been linked romantically only since June 2015, when they cruised the Mediterranean on his yacht, twins Morrocan and Monroe in tow at least part of the time. She gave him a public shout-out in July while performing in Vegas, where they’d reunited after two weeks apart.
“I got a new heart tonight,” she said. “James is in the house. Thank you for my heart. I dedicate this next song to you.”
(He reportedly sent her 1,000 roses upon his return. We’d sing a song for him too.)
One perk of accepting a billionaire’s proposal: The engagement ring is 35 carats.

“It was about mixing simplicity with volume, which is very difficult to do,” jeweler and Carey friend Wilfredo Rosado told Vogue, which has a photo of the bling. It’s one main stone and two baguettes, diamonds mounted in a platinum setting.
“I really wanted to create something for her that was about new beginnings ... ,” he said. “But it is epic. It’s an epic ring for an epic time in her life.” Rosado only had about two weeks to get the ring done, he told the magazine.
Rumors of Carey’s split with husband Nick Cannon after six years of marriage were confirmed in August 2014, with him saying they’d been living separately for months. He filed for divorce that December.
