Michelle Obama’s sunny State of the Union dress brings her fashion reign full circle

Michelle Obama’s dress lit up the room -- and the Internet -- during her husband’s final State of the Union address last night.

The sleeveless banded-bodice marigold-colored wool crepe midi dress from the Fall 2015 Narciso Rodriguez ready-to-wear collection not only echoed the optimistic tone of the commander in chief’s speech, it also provided a symbolic bookend of sorts: It was a striking red and black dress by the New York-based Rodriguez (the son of Cuban immigrants, by the way) that Mrs. Obama was memorably wearing when her husband made history on election night 2008.

Although the marigold dress is listed as “sold out” at the Neiman Marcus website (not wholly surprising since it’s from a collection that’s been at retail since July), a screengrab from the department store’s website posted to Twitter last night lists the price at $628, down from $2,095. (Similar -- but not exact -- silhouettes from the same designer still abound online. Unfortunately, that bright and cheery shade is nowhere to be found.)

Even at full price, that seems like a downright bargain compared to the off-the-rack dress actress Bryce Dallas Howard picked up at Neiman Marcus for Sunday night’s Golden Globes; a sequined petrol-blue gown that retails for a cool $4,800.
