Reese Witherspoon arrest, Part 2: The apologies

Looks to be a double-dose of regret coming out of the Reese Witherspoon-Jim Toth camp in the wake of their couples-style arrest in Friday’s wee hours in Atlanta.

In case you missed it: Toth was arrested on suspicion of DUI after reportedly driving in the wrong lane and then blowing a 0.139 on a breath test. In the process, Witherspoon declared herself to be famous -- a tidbit shared with a cop who couldn’t have given a flying fig and arrested her for disorderly conduct.

Leading up to her arrest, Witherspoon questioned whether the trooper was a real officer, according to the police report posted by the Smoking Gun, and was told “to sit on her butt and be quiet.” Perhaps she should have listened.

She was right about one thing — when she told the trooper, “You are going to be on national news.” (Can you say, “Hello, Sunday”?) They made bail a couple of hours after being taken into custody.

Now, both arrestees seem very, very sorry, according to a statement from her rep and a source close to Toth who spoke with People.

The Oscar-winner’s hubby “feels awful that he involved Reese in the situation,” a source close to Toth told the mag, adding that the CAA agent has always been “a big social drinker.” “He made a bad decision and it certainly made things worse that he dragged her into it.” Now, said the source, Toth “gets” it that he has to pay the consequences.

“No one would be surprised if Jim goes to rehab,” another source told People. Because nothing says “I’m sorry” like time in a 12-step program?

Witherspoon addressed the public through her rep Sunday.

“I do want to say I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said,” she said in a statement. “It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that was no excuse. I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. The words I used that night definitely do not reflect who I am. I have nothing but respect for the police and I am very sorry for my behavior.”

Kind of embarrassing to look in the mirror the day after and realize you decided to declare your U.S. citizenship and then proclaim the right to “stand on American ground,” no matter what the cop told you to do.

While the two appeared together Sunday at the premiere of her film “Mud” in New York City, she declined to speak with reporters on the red carpet, according to Us Weekly. She did, however, get the largest round of applause when introduced with her costars before the flick rolled, the mag said.

At least they weren’t on the very public Vegas Strip when they were nabbed, as when Paris Hilton and her then-beau Cy Waits were popped on DUI and drug charges back in 2010. Although Witherspoon’s playing the “I’m famous” card could conceivably have more blowback than Hilton’s drug-possession guilty plea, given that disorderly conduct and pulling attitude are so far out of the realm of Witherspoon’s buttoned-down public persona.

Husband and wife are due back in court in Atlanta on May 23 and May 22, respectively. She’s been in town filming “The Good Lie.”
