The red carpet pops with vibrant color

Many of the best dressed stars at Sunday night’s SAG awards picked up on spring’s biggest runway trend: vibrant color. And really, on a soggy wet Sunday, it was better than wilting in a pale shade of chiffon. (As much as I love Angie Harmon, I was worried that her feathery Monique Lhuillier gown was going to molt by the time she reached the end of the red carpet.)

Jennifer Lawrence and Mila Kunis were neck-and-neck for the evening’s most show-stopping looks. Lawrence wore a shocking pink Oscar de la Renta gown with a black ribbon belt (many of the gowns were belted, which looked fresh). And Kunis’ stunning, strapless red floral print Alexander McQueen gown was a distant cousin to the red McQueen that Michelle Obama wore to the state dinner for the People’s Republic of China earlier this month.

Hailee Steinfeld wore a candy-striped dress from the spring Prada collection and a pink Solange Azagury Partridge “lips” ring. It was a fun look — perfect for a 14-year-old up-and-coming fashion plate.

Julianna Margulies is another one who always seems to get it right, and her strapless red Yves Saint Laurent gown was no exception. It fit her like a dream.

And Christina Hendricks finally got it right. Instead of one of her usual wispy dress with a sweetheart-neckline to show off her voluptuousness, she chose a beaded long-sleeved wrap gown by L’Wren Scott. It was a dress truly worthy of the beautiful diva that she is.

Nicole Kidman and Natalie Portman can always be counted on to make some interesting fashion choices. For Kidman, it was a black, cap-sleeved Nina Ricci gown with a gorgeous lace back. (Her floral Fred Leighton necklace wasn’t too shabby, either.)

The pregnant Portman went with a white Azzaro gown with a silver beaded neckline, designed by Vanessa Seward. It made her look shapeless, which is old-fashioned for a maternity look. Her Viktor and Rolf gown at the Globes was a much better bet.

And for those who are still not convinced that there is more individuality on the red carpet this season, there was Julie Bowen. The “Modern Family” star dispensed with the ritual red carpet gown altogether in favor of a modern-looking, plunging black halter jumpsuit from Malandrino, Catherine Malandrino’s secondary line. She told E! Entertainment TV that she had been wanting to wear it for a while, and doesn’t care what people think. You go, girl!
