Rudresh Mahanthappa at Center for the Art of Performance
A relentlessly inventive alto saxophonist, Rudresh Mahanthappa showcases two sides of his musical personality with this show. First he’ll perform as part of his Indo-Pak Coalition, an exploration of his South Indian roots with the help of Pakistani-American guitarist Rez Abassi and drummer Dan Weiss, which will be followed by his latest ensemble with mind-bending guitarist David “Fuze” Fiuczynski, which picks up where John McLaughlin’s meeting of prog-rock, jazz and Indian music left off and ventures further forward on the new album, “Gamak.” Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA, Royce Hall, 340 Royce Drive, L.A. 8 p.m. Sat. $15-$35, https://cap.ucla.edu.
