Ellen Page emotionally discusses Orlando shooting with Chelsea Handler

As details continue to emerge about the shooting in Orlando, Fla., that left 49 patrons of a gay club dead and more than 50 others wounded, many celebrities have begun to share their feelings about the massacre. The latest adding her voice to the conversation is actress Ellen Page. While on “Chelsea,” comedian Chelsea Handler’s Netflix talk show, the 29-year-old “Juno” star fought back tears when discussing the incident.

“The reality is that violence toward LGBT people is a common thing ...” she said. “It really needs to stop because people are struggling, and they deserve to live freely and love freely and not be afraid.”

Page has been an outspoken advocate for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community since coming out in 2014 during a presentation at the Time to Thrive conference sponsored by the Human Rights campaign. In the speech, she dedicated herself to using her platform as an Oscar-nominated actress to make a difference.

“I am tired of hiding, and I am tired of lying by omission,” said Page in the speech. “I suffered for years because I was scared to be out. My spirit suffered, my mental health suffered and my relationships suffered. And I’m standing here today, with all of you, on the other side of all that pain.”

Page was joined on the “Chelsea” couch by actress Florence Henderson and Handler’s former second grade teacher Mrs. Schectman during the segment. The episode will be available for streaming on Netflix starting Thursday at 12:01 a.m.
