Saoirse Ronan and director John Crowley keep emotions in check in ‘Brooklyn’

“Brooklyn” is coming on strong as one of this season’s potential awards contenders. A success with audiences and critics at both Sundance and the New York Film Festival, it debuts in theaters on Nov. 4.

In advance of that opening, Los Angeles Times film critic Kenneth Turan had a conversation with two of “Brooklyn’s” key people, star Saoirse Ronan and director John Crowley.

Ronan, a star since she was nominated for her “Atonement” debut at age 12, talks about her personal connection to the material and the emotions involved in doing her first Irish role while also offering amusing insight into how a team of burly men created the effect of a ship rocking in the waves.

Director Crowley has extensive theatrical experience in addition to his film work, and he talks about the difference between working in the two mediums and offers insights into how the acclaimed Colm Toibin novel was turned into a film.
