Super Bowl gets superheroic with ‘Spider-Man 2,’ ‘Winter Soldier’ ads
In between the action on the field this Super Bowl Sunday, two superheroes will fight for audience attention. “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” each have TV spots lined up for the big game, and teasers for both are now online.
Sony Pictures’ 39-second teaser for “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” finds Andrew Garfield once again donning the red-and-blue Spidey suit, this time to battle a trio of villains: Jamie Foxx’s blue-skinned Electro, Paul Giamatti as the mech-suited Rhino, and a character that looks an awful lot like the Green Goblin. Electro gets the most screen time, and ominously warns the wall-crawler, “You wanted to be the hero, now you gotta pay the price.”
Emma Stone makes an appearance as damsel in distress Gwen Stacy, tumbling with Spidey through a glass ceiling skyscraper as the teaser urges viewers to “See what happens next” at the big game.
Sony, which has been searching for a blockbuster franchise along the lines of the original “Spider-Man” trilogy with Tobey Maguire or the “Men in Black” films, has high hopes for the “Amazing” series, with the third and fourth installments already announced. “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” opens May 2.
Disney meanwhile has unveiled a 15-second glimpse of its own superhero sequel, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” The spot opens with a shot of Sebastian Stan as the titular villain, clad in all black, toting a machine gun and sporting a mechanical arm. Also showing up are Samuel L. Jackson (playing Nick Fury) in flowing trench coat, Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) in skintight tactical suit, Anthony Mackie (The Falcon) with robotic wings, and of course Chris Evans as Cap himself.
“The Winter Soldier” is the the latest installment in the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe and is set after the 2012 all-star team-up “The Avengers.” The movie opens April 4.
