‘Fault in Our Stars’ trailer: Shailene Woodley tugs at heartstrings

Explosions are all too common in Hollywood movies these days, but they’re usually caused by giant robots, invading aliens or warring armies. The upcoming romance “The Fault in Our Stars,” starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort as two teenage cancer patients in love, features pyrotechnics of a different sort.

“I’m a grenade, and one day I’m going to blow up and I’m going to obliterate everything in my wake, and I don’t want to hurt you,” Woodley says to Elgort in the new trailer for the film, which opens June 6 from Fox.

Adapted from the bestselling young-adult novel by John Green and directed by Josh Boone, the movie stars Woodley as Hazel Grace Lancaster and Ansel Elgort as Augustus “Gus” Waters, two teens who meet in a cancer support group and fall in love, despite Hazel’s reluctance.

As Gus says in the trailer, which you can watch above, “You don’t get to choose if you get hurt in this world, but you do have a say in who hurts you.”

In addition to swoon-worthy lines that will have many moviegoers reaching for the tissue box — “I fell in love with him the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once” — the trailer offers glimpses of the movie’s unsentimental side. Hazel, for example, sports a breathing tube throughout and at one point declares her and Gus as “a hot mess.”

The video also introduces some the film’s supporting stars, including Laura Dern and Sam Sam Trammell as Hazel’s parents, Nat Wolff as a fellow patient, and Mike Birbiglia as the overly chipper, guitar-playing head of the support group.

If “The Fault in Our Stars” manages to connect with movie audiences the way it did with readers — the book boasts more than 7 million copies in print since its 2012 publication — it could serve as another rung on the ladder to stardom for rising stars Woodley and Elgort, who recently starred in the dystopian YA adaptation “Divergent” together.

That would be blowing up of a different sort.
