To the tune of 91 contenders, the Oscars narrow choices for best original song

The Academy Awards announced Tuesday the songs in the running for an Oscar nomination for best original song. The 91 selections span a range of genres, from musical (“La La Land”), animated film (“Trolls”), drama (“Hidden Figures”) and even documentary (“13th”).
Official nominees will be announced Jan. 24, with the ceremony slated for Feb. 26.

Among the contenders this year is Pharrell Williams, who was nominated for a 2014 Oscar for the song “Happy” from “Despicable Me.” He wrote songs for “Hidden Figures,” including the nominated “Runnin’” and “I See a Victory.”
Hamilton creator and performer Lin-Manuel Miranda was the lead songwriter for Disney’s animated “Moana.” Two songs from the film, “How Far I’ll Go” and “We Know the Way,” are up for nomination.
Highly acclaimed musical “La La Land” has three songs in contention, including “Audition (The Fools Who Dream),” “Start a Fire” and “City of Stars.”
Musician, songwriter and singer Stevie Wonder co-wrote “Faith” for rthe animated film “Sing.” “Set It All Free” is also in the running.
In 2015, rapper Common won an Oscar for the song “Glory” from the film “Selma.” This year, he’s up for another nomination for “Letter to the Free,” from the prison-reform documentary “13th.”
Summer earworm “Can’t Stop the Feeling” — from “Trolls” and co-written by pop star Justin Timberlake — made the cut. Another track from the film, “Get Back Up Again,” is also nominated.
