Grimes supports Hillary Clinton with nuke-filled Twitter video
“Please don’t let the world down.”
That was the rather sobering appeal Grimes (the stage name of musician Claire Boucher) used to accompany a grim election day video that more or less equates a Donald Trump victory with the promise of nuclear destruction.
Posted on Twitter, the short clip re-creates the controversial “Daisy” ad from Lyndon B. Johnson’s 1964 presidential battle against Barry Goldwater, in which a little girl is shown plucking the petals from a flower before a mushroom cloud erupts and Johnson delivers some grave thoughts about going into the dark.
“Vote for Secretary Clinton on November 8,” Grimes says at the end of the video, echoing Johnson’s original. “The stakes are too high for you to stay home.”
The Canadian singer and producer is one of many pop musicians to publicly support Hillary Clinton in the final hours of her campaign. On Monday night, Bruce Springsteen appeared with the candidate at an event in Philadelphia, as did Jon Bon Jovi and Lady Gaga at a North Carolina rally. And Madonna performed a pop-up acoustic show in New York’s Washington Square Park, serenading the crowd at one point with John Lennon’s “Imagine.”
