Richard Street, member of The Temptations, dies at 70

Richard Street, the former vocalist for the groundbreaking and best-selling R&B; act The Temptations, died Wednesday. He was 70.

Street sang on many of the group’s most popular singles, including “Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone,” “Superstar (Remember How You Got Where You Are),” “Heavenly” and “Hey Girl (I Like Your Style).”

Street was born in Detroit, the home of Motown Records, the label that shepherded the group to prominence. Street performed in an early pre-Temptations group with future Temptations founder Otis Williams.

Street didn’t officially join the group until a later incarnation, performing from 1971 to 1993. He continued a solo career up until his death, and toured widely in Europe last year.

He died from a blood clot in his lung at St. Rose Dominican Hospital in Las Vegas, according to his widow, Cindy Street. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children.

Street is the second Temptations singer to die this year. Damon Harris died Feb. 18 in Baltimore.
