Katy Perry’s concert movie: 5 takeaways from its world premiere

Katy Perry turned up at the premiere of her new concert movie Thursday night in a knee-length suit jacket that she said made her feel like she should be asking people to vote for her. But if the pop star looked something like a politician, she didn’t quite nail the slick calculation expected of a candidate.

In an onstage Q&A following the screening of “Katy Perry: The Prismatic World Tour,” set to air Saturday night on Epix, Perry was describing her regimen on the road when she mentioned that she likes to unwind after performances by firing up Netflix.

“I mean, Epix!” she added quickly.

Oops. Maybe an A for effort?

Here are five thoughts from Thursday’s event at downtown L.A.’s Theatre at the Ace Hotel.

1. The club is no longer Perry’s No. 1 tourist destination. In her younger days, she said, that’s where you could find her and her entourage in whatever city her tour stopped in. Now, though, “we go to the museum.” Recent highlights include Renaissance paintings in Florence, Anne Frank’s house in Amsterdam -- even Auschwitz, she said.

2. Her ultimate career goal is to be “the Pixar of pop.” Describing her fan base to her friendly interlocutor, Mario Lopez, Perry said, “You’d maybe think that it was a lot of young females.” In fact, she insisted, it spans ages 8 to 80 – a broad coalition not unlike the animation studio’s.

3. Next month Perry is scheduled to take her world tour to Asia, but after that, she plans to take a break. “I think this summer it’ll be very important for me to step outside of my world and my bubble,” she said, “and have really genuine, normal experiences.” Among them? Going to the farmer’s market and picking out fruit.

4. As for the movie itself, if you saw the show in person, don’t bother. “The Prismatic World Tour” – shot at a recent tour stop in Sydney, Australia – is probably unnecessary viewing for anyone who saw Perry’s show when it traveled the United States last year. That said, the film does offer close-ups of Perry that demonstrate what a natural comedian she is; there’s an extended riff on gluten in which she uses her eyes like a young Lucille Ball.

5. Perry’s fans are admirably zealous for how tiny they are. Perhaps that aforementioned bit was a sop to the 80-year-olds in the house, but most of the fans you see in the movie are closer to 8. And one of the things “Prismatic” does well is show you the intensity of their youthful devotion. Such adoration may have worn down Zayn Malik, but here, it’s kind of beautiful to behold.
