Mary J. Blige teams with Disclosure, Sam Smith for new album
Mary J. Blige has spent the last two decades blurring the lines among hip-hop, pop, R&B and even rock.
For her forthcoming album, “The London Sessions,” she’s tapping into the current British music scene.
Blige spent the summer in London recording with breakout house duo Disclosure, soul singer Sam Smith and Smith’s producer, Jimmy Napes. Other artist/producers Blige worked with include Naughty Boy, Emeli Sandé and Eg White (Adele, Florence and the Machine).
The album, which is set to be released on Dec. 2, is the singer’s first effort for Capitol Records.
“Mary J. Blige created a one-of-a-kind blend of hip-hop and soul that has excited fans for more than 20 years, making her one of the most successful and acclaimed artists in any genre of music,” Capitol Music Group Chairman Steve Barnett said in a statement.
Earlier this year, Blige hopped on a remix to Disclosure’s “F for You,” and joined the brother duo during the act’s performance at Coachella. She also collaborated with Smith for a duet of his smash, “Stay With Me.”
“‘The London Sessions’ is, number one, the bravest thing, and, number two, just so honest,” Smith said in a trailer for the album. The breakout soul singer co-wrote the album’s lead single, “Therapy.”
This is the second album from Blige this year. In June, she released the soundtrack for “Think Like A Man Too.”
Blige is scheduled to perform at the iTunes Festival at London’s Roundhouse on Sept. 25.
