Missy Elliott to play L.A. K-Pop convention KCON
Missy Elliott will perform alongside a roster of K-Pop superstars during KCON 2013, a two-day fan convention for the genre at Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena later this month.
Elliott will perform during the first U.S. taping of K-Pop countdown show “M Countdown” on Aug. 25 as part of the convention. The taping will also feature performances from K-Pop stars EXO, f(x), 2AM, Teen Top, Dynamic Duo and G-Dragon.
But what will the Grammy-winning rapper -- known for her innovative, genre-hopping beats and quirky rhymes -- perform? Elliott’s fans have been waiting for the follow-up to 2005’s “The Cookbook,” but the multi-hyphenate star has largely retreated behind the scenes of late, writing and producing for other artists while occasionally dropping guest verses. She issued a handful of singles late last year to tease a long-gestating seventh album.
TIMELINE: Summer’s must see concerts
Earlier this year, Elliott confirmed that she would be featured on the new album from the singer, rapper and producer G-Dragon, who is best known as the front man of one of the genre’s most popular acts, Big Bang.
The U.S.-based convention devoted to K-Pop culture attracted more than 10,000 fans when it was launched at Irvine’s Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre last year. The event expanded to two days for its first time in L.A. and will feature dance, songwriting and fashion workshops and panels focused on everything from breaking out on YouTube, Asians in hip-hop and stateside K-Pop hitmakers.
KCON 2013 will take over the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena on Aug. 24-25. Tickets range from $60 to $300 and can be purchased on the convention’s website.
