Is he in or is he out? We still don’t know whether singer Scott Weiland and Stone Temple Pilots are ever, ever getting back together, but in conjunction with a solo tour for which he’s backed by a new band, Weiland says he’s still a member of the long-running rock group that recently announced it had “terminated” him.

“There are some issues that have to be worked out with STP,” Weiland told Spin magazine in preparing for his Purple at the Core solo tour, “but they’re the same issues that have been going on since the end of the last tour. Nobody in the band can be fired. No one’s ever fired anybody, and no one’s ever quit the band.”

The public debate over his place in STP “is something that has taken on its own life,” he said. “Behind the scenes, it’s really not anything different than what was going on before.”

Last week the group issued a terse statement saying, “Stone Temple Pilots have announced they have officially terminated Scott Weiland.”

The singer subsequently said he could not be fired from the band he co-founded, and after that joked with TMZ that the whole affair was was stunt to boost ticket sales for his solo outing, which includes a dozen dates, none in California, from March 9 in New York through March 29 in Austin, Texas.

Stone Temple Pilots “really have been together a long time, and I’m proud of that,” he told Spin. “I really do like those guys, and it hurts my feelings when we aren’t getting along, because I view them as family.”

The rest of the Stone Temple Pilots camp has offered no further comment.
