Taylor Swift joins Rolling Stones for ‘As Tears Go By’
“As Tears Go By” was one of the first songs that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards ever wrote together. Marianne Faithfull made it a hit in 1964. But a different blond ingenue performed it with the Stones in Chicago on Monday night -- Taylor Swift.
Swift -- the latest in a series of pop and rock guests to play with the Stones on this tour -- had been tipped to tackle a song with them before the show.
But the early hit is a relative rarity in the band’s live catalog, and all parties seemed to enjoy taking the winsome ballad for a spin (watch Mick’s jaunty dance moves below).
Fellow guests on the Stones’ 50 and Counting tour have included Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Tom Waits and Dave Grohl. But the Stones obviously saw a particular connection across generations between Swift and Faithfull’s handling of their tune, and and she looked thrilled to be given the assignment of handling one of the band’s landmark compositions.
L.A., of course, got its share of Stones saturation weeks ago -- between a surprise Echoplex gig and a thorough round of Staples shows. But as this tour takes the band past its 50th year, it’s nice to see that even today’s pop stars get a charge from the Stones’ very early catalog.
