‘The Late Show With Stephen Colbert’ to broadcast live during political conventions

Stephen Colbert is going live during next month’s political conventions, CBS announced Wednesday.

“The Late Show” will air live from July 18 to July 21 during the Republican National Convention in Cleveland and will resume live broadcast during the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia from July 25 to July 28.

Colbert will host the show, as usual, out of the Ed Sullivan Theater in Manhattan, but “The Late Show” will have a presence on the ground at both events, according to CBS.

Going live at 11:35 p.m. should allow “The Late Show” to react in a more timely fashion to the conventions and leverage Colbert’s perceived strength as a political commentator.

The move comes as “The Late Show” continues to find its footing after 10 months on the air and is locked with ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in a tight race for second place in the ratings.

Chris Licht, formerly of “CBS This Morning,” was brought on board in April as executive producer and show runner, reportedly to free up Colbert to focus on performing.
