Some kind of powerful witchcraft gripped the ratings for FX’s “American Horror Story: Coven.”

Wednesday’s premiere of FX’s horror miniseries scared up the best numbers yet in the “American Horror Story” franchise, with 5.5 million total viewers tuning in, according to Nielsen.

That was up more than 40% compared with the premiere of “American Horror Story: Asylum,” which drew 3.8 million last year.

Most impressively, in the key demographic of viewers aged 18 to 34 “AHS” was the No. 1 show on TV during prime time Wednesday, beating everything on the broadcast networks. Among viewers aged 18 to 49 -- the demographic that governs most of the TV business -- “AHS” was No. 2, behind only ABC’s sitcom smash “Modern Family.”

When two later encore showings were included, “AHS” delivered nearly 8 million total viewers for the night.
