Andrew Garfield goes acoustic for ‘Spider-Man’ theme on ‘Tonight Show’

Andrew Garfield dropped by “The Tonight Show” on Thursday to promote “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” but he went above and beyond when it came to burnishing his Spider-Man cred with longtime fans.

Garfield surprised the audience with an acoustic, crooning performance of the theme song to the 1967 animated “Spider-Man” TV series. The one with lyrics that go, “Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a spider can.”

The song, with lyrics by Oscar winner Paul Francis Webster and music by Bob Harris, has actually been a part of most of the film adaptations. It was featured in some way in all three Sam Raimi-directed “Spider-Man” films, including a Michael Bublé cover on the soundtrack for “Spider-Man 2.”

The theme song has long been a favorite for bands to cover. Aerosmith did a version of it for the first “Spider-Man” movie, and punk bands the Ramones, Stikky and the Mr. T Experience have all done covers of the theme on albums.

“I’m no Adele Nazeem,” Garfield cautioned as he strapped the guitar on, referencing John Travolta’s notorious mispronunciation of singer Idina Menzel on the Oscars. “This is the first time I’ve ever sung in public,” he said.

Then he tore into a soulful version of his character’s famous theme song, backed by the Roots and host Jimmy Fallon on tambourine.
