AOL announces 16 new original series

AOL announced a broad range of programming during its presentation at the Digital Content NewFront in Brooklyn on Tuesday night. In total, the online company will debut 16 original series on its video channel AOL On Network.

The new series, mostly nonfiction, rely heavily on the audiences’ desire to see celebrities doing things besides acting, whether it’s talking about their favorite movies or paying tribute to a loved one.

The new series, which will premiere on AOL On Network throughout 2014, include:

“Making a Scene With James Franco,” in which Franco and other celebrities discuss their favorite movie scenes, then re-create the scene in an absurd, yet loving, way.

“Kevin Nealon’s Laugh Lessons” stars the former “SNL” and “Weeds” comedian as he and other stand-ups attempt to teach comedy to children.

“Inspired,” featuring celebrities and other newsworthy types recounting moments that inspired them.

“My Hero,” a series executive produced by Zoe Saldana, in which celebrities pay surprise in-person tribute to people who changed their lives.

“Win/Win” features famous athletes and successful entrepreneurs for off-the-cuff conversation.

“That’s Racist,” hosted by comedian Mike Epps, looks at the origins of offensive stereotypes.

“So Much More” documents the transition of punk rock singer Tom Gabel to become the woman Laura Jane Grace. She also interviews other members of the often misunderstood transgender community.

“Follow Me” looks at the real lives of modern digital media stars, taking viewers behind the Twitter accounts and YouTube channels.

“The Road to Disrupt” is a real-life “Silicon Valley,” in which five startup companies compete to win $50,000 in funding at the TechCrunch Disrupt Startup Battlefield in San Francisco.

“In Short” allows various actors to create a documentary through their own eyes and features work by Katie Holmes, Jeff Garlin, Alia Shawkat, James Purefoy and Judy Greer.

“Connected” is a long-form video series that follows the lives of five seemingly unconnected New Yorkers whose lives eventually come together.

“Park Bench” follows actor Steve Buscemi as he attempts to reveal his special relationship with New York City and the people and personalities that make the city great.

“#Candidlynicole” stars Nicole Richie in a reality series based on her Twitter feed.

“City.Ballet.” is executive produced by Sarah Jessica Parker and looks at the lives of dancers with the New York City Ballet.

“The Future Starts Here” is a docuseries from filmmaker Tiffany Shlain that looks at where our society may be heading in terms of technology.

“Hardwired 2.0” is the second season of the AOL series hosted by Justine Ezarik, a.k.a. iJustine, as she looks at the hottest tech trends around the country.
