‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s’ Joe Lo Truglio talks Halloween episode

It wouldn’t be October if there weren’t an onslaught of Halloween-themed programming to binge on. Fox is getting into the spirit with a couple of its Tuesday comedies.

Freshman comedy “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” which was recently picked up for a full season, is giving viewers a taste of Halloween in Brooklyn. The episode will center on Charles, played by Joe Lo Truglio, trying to get Halloween-hating Amy to see the joy in the holiday. The pair will have to wear costumes while going undercover on the streets. For Lo Truglio, that means something kooky -- and what’s more off-center than dressing as celebrity chef Mario Batali, a.k.a. the Ginger Prince of Little Italy (check out the exclusive sneak peek above)?

“This is a big moment for any show,” Lo Truglio said. “Holiday-themed episodes are big deals, right?”

Lo Truglio, whose Charles Boyle is a boob of a detective -- last week, his character’s idea of revenge included replacing someone’s aloe tissues with regular tissues -- wasn’t sure how much he could tease about the costumes that would make cameos in the episode, only saying “they have to do with current events. There are political figures ... and it’s not what you think.”

One can only imagine. Dan Goor and Michael Schur, executive producers of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” are well-trained in the area. Characters from “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation” have been creative with their offerings: Jim (John Krasinski) of “The Office” wrote “book” across his face, giving us, duh, Facebook. In “Parks and Recreation,” Ann Perkins (Rashida Jones) channeled gold medal gymnast Gabby Douglas.

Of course, Lo Truglio seems proficient enough to add some ideas to the mix.

“I used to live in New York, so I definitely checked out the Halloween parade down in Greenwich Village and saw some great costumes,” he said. “My favorite that I ever did -- I held a handheld mini fan and blew bubbles through it. My friend wore a blue turtleneck with a blond wig and would go toward fan. And I was saying, ‘Burp, Charlie, burp!’ It was a ‘Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory’ costume. It was very complicated, but once you got it, people loved it.

“Another year, I was so lazy I just went to a deli and got a piece of fruit and I went as Peach and the Giant James. That is not a joke. Hopefully if we get a season 2, there will be a Halloween episode and I can get in on costume brainstorming.”
