‘Bunheads’ cast reunites for a farewell dance

“Bunheads,” the recently canceled ABC Family series from “Gilmore Girls” creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, didn’t draw huge ratings, but its fan base was intensely devoted. Which is probably why Sherman-Palladino felt compelled to gather members of her cast earlier this month to film one final goodbye dance.

The series followed a former Vegas showgirl (Sutton Foster) as she settled into life teaching ballet at a small dance academy in a quiet Southern California town. Though the series was a beloved critical hit, the channel waited for months after its first-season finale to make its cancellation official.

While that news was no doubt heartbreaking to the show’s fans, the cast’s farewell may been even more so. On Aug. 17, Sherman-Palladino gathered cast members Bailey Buntain, Julia Goldani Telles, Kaitlyn Jenkins, Jeanine Mason, Matisse Love, Ra’Jahnae “Rae Rae” Patterson, Colleen Craig, Maine Kawashima, Eli Gruska, Adam Bernstein, Edgar Khachaturov, Kara Hess and Micah Moch for a final dance and thank you to the fans.

Choreographed by series choreographer Marguerite Derricks and directed by Sherman-Palladino, the dance, set to Elton John’s “Blues for Baby and Me,” will no doubt draw tears from even those with a passing interest in the series.

For dedicated “Bunheads” fans, however, the dance contains fun references to other dances seen in the course of the show’s 18 episodes, including the dance set to They Might Be Giants’ “Istanbul (Not Constantinople).”

After the dance, the video ends with the simple goodbye, “For everyone who came to play in our sandbox -- We thank you.” If ever there was a show ripe for a Kickstarter-backed revival, “Bunheads” seems to be it.
