‘From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series’ gets second season

El Rey, writer-director Robert Rodriguez’s recently launched Latino cable channel, has its first renewal. On Wednesday, the channel announced it had greenlighted a second season of “From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series.”

The series, based on Rodriguez’s 1995 film of the same name, follows the same overall story line of two American criminals who go south of the Mexican border to evade authorities and wind up in a strip club populated with vampires. D.J. Cotrona and Zane Holtz play the brothers, replacing the feature film’s George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino.

The series takes the film’s story and expands it with new characters and dives deeper into the mythology of the vampires that use the club as a way to trap and dine on unwary travelers. Other cast members include Don Johnson, Robert Patrick and Eiza Gonzalez as the stripper/vampire queen.

The series was renewed for a second 13-episode season the day after the third episode of the first season aired.

In a statement, the network’s vice chair, Scott Sassa, said, “Our decision to launch this ambitious original in just our first few months on the air was certainly bold but the payoff has been incredibly satisfying. As the television landscape becomes even more crowded, it’s important for El Rey Network to have a recurring and memorable franchise that speaks to our audience and allows us to break away from the noise of all the competition.”

Rodriguez himself directed four of the first season’s 13 episodes.
