‘Good Morning America’ wins season for first time in two decades
“Good Morning America” has been regularly beating NBC’s long-dominant “Today” in morning show ratings for a while now, and that streak has finally put the ABC show on top for the season.
On Friday, ABC announced that “GMA” was the No. 1 morning show for the 2012-13 TV season, beating “Today” in total viewers and in the key adult demographic. It’s the first time “GMA” has been No. 1 in 19 years.
“GMA,” which has received a boost from the likability and medical travails of co-anchor Robin Roberts, averaged 5.3 million viewers last season. By comparison, second-ranked “Today” averaged 4.6 million. It’s the widest margin “GMA” has had over “Today” since at least 1991, when Nielsen’s electronic database began.

It’s the third straight year of growth for the ABC morning show, which saw its audience grow by 9% over last season.
“Today’s” run atop the morning show ratings heap came to an end in April 2012, and though it returned to the top a few times after that, “GMA” has consistently beaten it the last 51 weeks.
Third-ranked “CBS This Morning” averaged just 2.7 million viewers during the season.
