HBO renews ‘70s rock series ‘Vinyl’ for a second season
“Vinyl” will be getting an encore.
HBO has announced it’s ordered a second season of the drama set in the debauched music scene in ‘70s New York City.

The series, which boasts Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger as executive producers, stars Bobby Cannavale as Richie Finestra, president of a floundering record label, and Olivia Wilde as his restless wife, Devon, a sobered-up Factory Girl living in the Connecticut suburbs. Terence Winter serves as showrunner, a role he previously held on the HBO series “Boardwalk Empire.”
Created by Scorsese, Jagger, Winter and journalist Richard Cohen, “Vinyl” faced a 20-year journey to the small screen. It was originally conceived as a film, but later retooled as a dramatic series.
Given its high-profile pedigree -- and HBO’s current drama shortage -- a second season of “Vinyl” was likely. However, ratings for Sunday’s two-hour premiere were soft, with fewer than 800,000 viewers tuning in despite an aggressive promotional push by the network.
Reviews have been mixed. Though outlets such as the Hollywood Reporter and New York magazine have praised the series, others have been less thrilled. Los Angeles Times critic Robert Lloyd faulted “Vinyl” for focus on characters he found “unbearably tiresome and uninteresting.”
