David Letterman welcomes 10 legendary athletes for top 10 list

David Letterman gathered 10 legendary athletes at the Ed Sullivan Theatre on Monday to read off the evening’s top 10 list on the “Late Show With David Letterman.”

The topic was 10 career highlights from Madison Square Garden, and to share their favorites, Letterman was joined on stage by former Knicks players Walt “Clyde” Frazier, Larry Johnson, John Starks, Bill Bradley and Carmelo Anthony; former Rangers players Rod Gilbert, Adam Graves and Henrik Lundqvist; retired boxer Gerry Cooney and a very distraught John McEnroe, ex-tennis champ and world renowned ranter.

While most of the players read entries somewhat related to their careers, it was McEnroe at No. 1 who left the biggest impression, screaming, “The Jonas Brothers are splitting up? I never would have done this lousy show if I’d known about the Jonas Brothers.” Then he stormed off the stage.

Other career highlights? Graves is split between winning the Stanley Cup in 1994 and “Disney on Ice,” while Starks can’t forget being featured on the Kiss Cam with former Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy.

One fun, interesting bit is being able to hear Letterman’s brief thank yous to the players after they’d read the list, including thanking Cooney for the gift of a boxing glove.
