SAG Awards nominations: ‘True Detective,’ ‘Modern Family’ lead the way

Familiar faces ruled the nominations for the 21st Screen Actors Guild Awards announced Wednesday morning, with only four nominees coming from shows in their first seasons.

Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey of the HBO series “True Detective” both received nominations, as did Viola Davis of ABC’s “How to Get Away With Murder” and Billy Bob Thornton of FX’s “Fargo.” But many of the nominees have been TV fixtures for years, including those from the recently concluded HBO series “Boardwalk Empire.”

Notably, several snubs from last year finally made the cut, including the casts of Netflix’s “House of Cards” and “Orange Is the New Black” and Tatiana Maslany from BBC America’s “Orphan Black.”

Edie Falco grabbed her fifth individual acting nomination for Showtime’s “Nurse Jackie,” which was her 21st SAG Award nomination overall, making her the most nominated performer ever at the SAG Awards.

Previous ensemble winners “Boardwalk Empire” and PBS’ “Downton Abbey” will be competing with Showtime’s “Homeland,” HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and first-time nominee “House of Cards.”

The female actor in a drama series category will have a six-way race this year, thanks to a tie in the nominations. Last year’s winner Maggie Smith in “Downton Abbey” is joined by Davis, Claire Danes in “Homeland,” Julianna Margulies in CBS’ “The Good Wife,” first-timer Maslany in “Orphan Black” and Robin Wright in “House of Cards.”

HBO dominated the male actor in a drama series category with “True” detectives Harrelson and McConaughey competing against two-time winner Steve Buscemi in “Boardwalk Empire” and Peter Dinklage in “Game of Thrones.” Non-HBO star Kevin Spacey was also nominated for “House of Cards.”

Continuing a trend from last year, the broadcast networks fared much better in the comedy categories than in the drama categories, in which the only two network nominees were Davis and Margulies. The cast of ABC’s “Modern Family” was nominated again, giving it a chance to extend its winning streak in the comedy ensemble category to five years in a row. It competes with the casts of Fox’s “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Orange Is the New Black” CBS’ “The Big Bang Theory” and HBO’s “Veep.”

Last year’s winner, Ty Burrell, received his fifth individual nomination for “Modern Family,” alongside costar Eric Stonestreet. They’ll compete with Jim Parsons in “The Big Bang Theory,” Louis C.K. in “Louie” and William H. Macy in “Shameless.”

Actress Uzo Aduba received her first nomination for “Orange Is the New Black” and will compete against last year’s winner, Julia Louis-Dreyfus in “Veep,” Julie Bowen in “Modern Family,” Falco in “Nurse Jackie” and Amy Poehler in NBC’s “Parks and Recreation.”

Oscar winner Adrien Brody was nominated for the History miniseries “Houdini” and will compete against Benedict Cumberbatch in PBS’ “Sherlock: His Last Vow,” Richard Jenkins in HBO’s “Olive Kitteridge,” Mark Ruffalo in HBO’s “The Normal Heart” and Thornton in “Fargo.”

Oscar winners Ellen Burstyn, Julia Roberts and Frances McDormand were nominated for Lifetime’s “Flowers in the Attic,” “The Normal Heart” and “Olive Kitteridge,” respectively, alongside Maggie Gyllenhaal in Sundance TV’s “The Honourable Woman” and Cicely Tyson in Lifetime’s “The Trip to Bountiful.”

The stunt teams of “Boardwalk Empire,” “Game of Thrones,” “Homeland,” Fox’s “24: Live Another Day,” FX’s “Sons of Anarchy” and AMC’s “The Walking Dead” were also nominated, with a tie resulting in a six-way race.

The SAG Awards are scheduled for Jan. 25 at the Shrine Exposition Hall in Los Angeles and are to be broadcast live on TNT and TBS at 5 p.m. PST.
