Starz greenlights time-traveling ‘Outlander’ series
Starz has given the greenlight to “Outlander,” a new series set in 18th century Scotland and based on the bestselling series of books by Diana Gabaldon.
The series follows Claire Randall, a 20th century doctor who travels in time back to Scotland in the 1740s where she is forced to marry a young Scottish warrior. The seven-book series has been described as a mix of romance, adventure, history and science fiction.
The TV adaptation is being overseen by writer and executive producer Ronald D. Moore, best known for his work reinvigorating “Battlestar Galactica” on SyFy.
Starz Chief Executive Chris Albrecht said in a statement, “Diana has created an incredibly compelling heroine, thrust into a very complex world, not to mention, time. The books weave a fascinating tapestry of history, spirituality, love and honor, not to mention plenty of time travel, sex and warfare.”
The first book in the series, “Outlander,” was published in 1991. It has since gone on to become an international bestseller, with a spinoff series, graphic novel adaptations and more.
Starz has ordered 16 episodes of the series, which are expected to air sometime in 2014.
