Tragic ending for ‘The Love Boat’ ship

The cruise ship used in the classic TV series “The Love Boat” made one more run on its way to be dismantled at a port in Turkey last week, but its final moments have been marred by tragedy: Two people have died from exposure to toxic gases as the result of an accident that happened while the boat was entering its final port of call over the weekend.

According to CNN, the ship once known as the Pacific Princess and seen in the opening credits of “The Love Boat,” which aired on ABC from 1977 to 1987, was entering the port of Aliaga in Turkey when it sustained damage and began taking on water in a storage area under the main engine.

Electric pumps were used to remove the water, but a buildup of engine exhaust led to eight people getting toxic exposure to the gases.

Two of those people died. The other six were treated at a hospital and have been released.

Imzir Ship Recycling had recently bought the boat for $3.3 million.

The attorney general’s office in Aliaga has begun an investigation into the accident, which has been delayed while Imzir continues to remove water from the boat.

After that, the boat -- which was once the fictional home of Captain Stubing, Isaac, Gopher and the rest of the crew -- is to be dismantled.
