Report: Alexander Wang to leave Balenciaga
Creative director Alexander Wang is on his way out at Balenciaga, WWD reports. Citing unnamed “market sources,” the WWD says that Wang’s New York Fashion Week show in September will be his last for Balenciaga, which hired him in December 2012. Speculation about Wang’s future with the label began earlier this month, though all Kering, Balenciaga’s parent company, would say is, “There are discussions between the designer and Balenciaga regarding the renewal of the contract.”
Just in time for back-to-school shopping, Delia*s is coming back. The online teen retailer went bankrupt in December 2014, but is now under new ownership led by Steve Russo, founder and chief executive of Fab NY, and Brian Lattman, who purchased Alloy Apparel and Accessories from Delia*s in June 2013. The new Delia*s is slated to launch Aug. 6. The announcement was made via news release and on Instagram, where it garnered more than 50,000 likes.
British style icon Jane Birkin has asked Hermes to remove her name from one iteration of the famous Birkin bag, one that comes in crocodile, following a PETA investigation into crocodile slaughter. Hermes said in a statement that it doesn’t own the crocodile farm implicated and that, while it will investigate, skins from that farm are not used to make Birkins. “Hermes imposes on its partners the highest standards in the ethical treatment of crocodiles,” Hermes said in a statement.
Calvin Klein is now using sexting in ads for Calvin Klein Jeans. “We’re highlighting the truth about dating – the meetup, the hookup and the freedom that you have through the digital dating landscape and how instantaneous it is,” chief marketing officer Melissa Goldie told Rachel Strugatz at WWD.
What happens when you combine items such as discarded tires, surgical masks and foam cups into the shapes of clothing? Art, and it’s on view through Sept. 6 at the Fowler Museum at UCLA in Los Angeles. The exhibit, “Making Strange,” features works by Vivan Sundaram, an artist from Delhi, India, who used discards to make sculptural couture-style garments. The museum, located on UCLA’s north campus, is open from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday, noon to 8 p.m. Thursday, and noon to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday.
