New York Fashion Week spring 2014: Black Sail by Nautica

NEW YORK -- The Black Sail by Nautica menswear collection hit the runway at the Lincoln Center tents at Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week on Sept. 6.

Inspiration: The modern waterman.

The look: Lots of technical fabrics used in pieces that were intended to be functional on the high seas and fashionable on dry land. There were plenty of light outerwear pieces including hooded anoraks, windbreakers, chunky sweaters and hoodies as well as a range of beach-appropriate shorts. The color palette was grounded in white and a range of sea-blue hues with the occasional pop of bright yellow and red.

Key pieces: Always a sucker for a tropical print, our favorites included the blue ocean print that appeared on swim trunks and a pair of drawstring beach pants, and an ocean-blue engineered cotton dobby pullover with an ombre effect that evoked the horizon where the sky meets the sea.

The verdict: If the runway shows do eventually leave Lincoln Center and relocate to the pier (a notion that’s been discussed recently), we couldn’t think of a better starting point for some seriously stylish -- and functional -- Fashion Week Yacht Club uniforms.
