Fashion illustrator Tony Viramontes exhibition to open in L.A.
The L.A.-born fashion illustrator Tony Viramontes captured the gender-bending electricity of the 1980s like no one else.
He made a name for himself with his drawings of dominant women dressed in the theatrical haute couture of the day. In addition to putting pencil to paper, he was also a clothing stylist, makeup artist and hairdresser who collaborated with Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino, Chanel, Christian Dior and more to create images with attitude.
Viramontes, who died in 1988, has been celebrated this year with a new book, “Bold Beautiful and Damned: The World of 1980s Fashion Illustrator Tony Viramontes” by British journalist Dean Rhys Morgan, an online auction and a window display at Bergdorf Goodman in New York.
And now his work is coming home to Los Angeles, where 40 of his illustrations will be exhibited beginning Thursday at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising.
Guests are invited to a reception Thursday night, which will include a lecture and book signing with author Morgan and one of Viramontes’ early muses, model Janice Dickinson. The installation of drawings will run through Dec. 21.
