New York Fashion Week: New venues, designer debuts and anniversaries
New York Fashion Week begins Wednesday, and with so many designers abandoning the official Lincoln Center hub and decamping uptown, downtown and all around to show their fall 2014 collections, this could be the season of the transportation snafu.
Not that I’m complaining; there are certainly worse things than worrying about getting to a fashion show on time. And at least Alexander Wang, one of the week’s biggest draws, has provided step-by-step directions — and Uber.com coupons — to his new venue in Brooklyn.
There are a couple of interesting debuts. American leathergoods brand Coach has a new creative director following Reed Krakoff‘s departure — it’s designer Stuart Vevers, a Brit who has a history at several European luxury goods houses, including Louis Vuitton, Mulberry and Loewe. He will present his first collection of apparel and accessories for Coach on Thursday.
Also newsworthy: Jason Wu, the designer made famous by First Lady Michelle Obama, will be presenting his first runway show for Boss on Feb. 12, and no doubt trying to add some sizzle to German menswear brand Hugo Boss’ staid women’s label. He’s also made a film showcasing his new vision, titled “This Is Boss,” which goes live Friday on the Hugo Boss website.
It’s shaping up to be a week of anniversaries too, starting with Diane von Furstenberg, who continues her celebration of 40 years of the wrap dress with a runway show featuring live music by St. Vincent. The show will be held at Spring Studios and streamed live online Sunday at 5 p.m. EST at DVF.com.
Donna Karan is celebrating the 30th anniversary of her brand at her runway show Monday. Perhaps playing on her tradition of power dressing for women, the show is being held in the Financial District at 23 Wall St., a historic building known as “The Corner” that formerly belonged to J.P. Morgan and Co.
Speaking of cool venues, Cynthia Rowley is holding her presentation Feb. 12 at the Diamond Horseshoe at the Paramount Hotel. A vaudeville club in its heyday from the 1930s to the ‘50s, it was restored by developer Aby Rosen and reopened last month.
Lots of L.A. labels are in town showing, including Clover Canyon, Trina Turk, JC Obando and Barbara Tfank. But Rachel Zoe has decided to sit out this season and focus instead on her newest arrival, baby Kaius Jagger.
