New York Fashion Week spring 2014: Gregory Parkinson review
NEW YORK -- The pastel laces and hand-painted cashmeres by Los Angeles-based designer Gregory Parkinson more than held their own next to the colorful collages on the walls of the Chelsea art gallery where his New York Fashion Week presentation took place.
The inspiration: bringing his aesthetic to more casual pieces. Case in point, the big news of the season is Parkinson’s collaboration with the knitwear company Parker Blue on hand-painted, shrunken cashmere crewnecks and cardigans.
The sweaters added sportiness when paired with high-waisted, double-layer lace skirts and shorts, or mini dresses in a painterly polka dot fabric. He also showed cropped tops and maxi-skirts in gorgeous watercolor lace florals.
The verdict: It never ceases to amaze me what magic Parkinson can create by making the slightest shifts to his technique and materials. And adding more casual pieces (there were a couple of T-shirts, too), happily expands his colorful universe.
