N.Y. Fashion Week: Victoria Beckham loosens up

NEW YORK -- It wasn’t just hunky hubby David Beckham who rousted the fashion pack out of bed early on a Sunday morning. (Though it certainly helped.) Victoria Beckham’s collection has evolved into a must-see.

The inspiration: This season, Beckham played with new proportions (a longer-line tunic over a long skirt, for example) and a more fluid silhouette, adding pleats and ruffles for a whimsical yet relaxed look.

Key pieces: Long and lean coats fastened with a side chain detail. Long, black pleated skirt with gold chain detail at the hip (kind of a modern take on the kilt). Sleeveless and backless tailored white blazer worn with slouchy white pants. Sheer black short sleeve top with exaggerated shoulder ruffle. White, pleated abstract print skirt worn with black halter top. Black modern goddess gown with white inset at neckline and gold chain at waist. Flat, pointy-toed shoes.

The verdict: Fabulous collection. Beckham loosened up her trademark architectural approach, and it paid off. These clothes were less slickly severe, and more tactile and accessible than past efforts.
