Tom Ford brings star-studded spectacle to Hollywood
Tom Ford brought the runway a little closer to the red carpet on Friday night, when he presented his spectacular fall 2015 women’s runway show in Los Angeles at the beginning of Oscar weekend.
At Milk Studios in Hollywood, he built a replica of the show space where he usually presents his collection during London Fashion Week. And he invited 500 of his closest friends from the film, TV, music and fashion worlds, including Beyonce, Jay Z, Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Lopez, Fergie, Julianne Moore, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sofia Vergara, Magic Johnson, Elton John, Vogue editor Anna Wintour and on and on.
The impressive crowd made the cocktail party before the show look like the first commercial break at the Oscars.
On a runway strewn with white rose petals, Ford showed the kind of rich bohemian collection with a 1970s spin that would be at home in L.A. “It was actually a Hitchcock heroine if she morphed into a rich bohemian,” Ford said afterward. “Very controlled, not dirty hippie.”
He also returned to the sportier aesthetic for which he was so beloved when he was creative director at Gucci. Case in point, those super-luxe jeans, with a patchwork of rainbow velvet on the legs, worn with suede knee boots and a black peasant top. You could almost hear the collective swoon from the front row.
Ford loves fringe, and it was out in full force, swinging from the back of a blazer, and falling in tiers from gorgeous dresses. He’s also never short on sex appeal: a black jersey maxidress had an open back, except for a single velvet ribbon tied across in a bow.
There were modernist swirls of color, sequins and textured metallic embroidery on slim-silhouetted evening gowns. But model Karlie Kloss closed out the show in a killer all-black version, creating an unforgettable fashion moment as petals fell from the ceiling like snowflakes.
